Open vs Closed Source

This is the first post of this blog which helps users to know more about Open Source and how they are more preferable over Closed Source with these points covering the basic aspects of Open Source vs Closed Source.

Ubuntu is Open Source operating system and I guess you know about basic differences between open source and closed source and if not then here are some of them.

Open Source Software

  • Open Source Software have their Source code available
  • Open Source Software are generally free of cost but not always
    • There is a big misconception that open source software are free always but no, they are not. Sometimes the developer may charge some fee for accessing or using an open source software.
  • Open Source Software prevents vendor locking as all users have equal rights to the software and no priorities are set to it.
  • Open Source Software are great for developers to start with.
  • More then regular updates as huge number of developer are contributing to it.

Closed Source Software
  • Closed Source Software do not provide their Source code to public.
  • Closed Source Software generally charge a lot but also provide services accordingly
    • People generally say that closed source are software are proprietary software meaning that they are focused for the rich and does not provide enough in exchange but that's 100% false. Closed Source Software do charge a lot but they also provide services accordingly.
  • Closed Source Software do lock the vendor.
  • Closed Source Software's not meant for developers as developers can't read the code and cannot contribute to it, keeping the number of developers less and innovation lesser.
  • Less updates but updates are scheduled.
    • Open Source updates are more appreciated then closed source but it all depends on the user as for Open Source updates are regular but if the user have a problem it is generally solved but the user don't have any assurance that the issue will be solved or not it all depends on the mood of developer but in case of Closed Source if user have any bug to be fixed then the user have a company or organization to get it done.

So seeing the above Pros and Cons of Open Source and Closed Source it all depends on the user what to choose according to their priorities since both have their own ground of battles but yes this blog will be more focused on Open Source Software and Operating System(mainly Ubuntu).
